Surfaces that I work on include: glass, Stone, Terracotta, etc.

Materials used include: smalti (Venetian glass), glass, ceramic tiles, stone, pebbled stone, broken china, terra-cotta.

Glossary of Terms:

Adhesive: Binder that is used to attach mosaic pieces to the working surface.

Byzantine Mosaic: the main characteristic of Byzantine style is presence of glass and gold glass (used mainly for the backgrounds). Another feature- objects tend to be outlined in darker colors. All the shapes are defined by high row organization, that is each piece of glass is part of a row, there are no loose pieces.

Ceramic Tiles: made of fired clay that is either glazed over or unglazed. Come in variety of colors and finishes. Used in Roman type mosaics and other styles.

Direct Technique: Mosaic pieces are attached directly to the surface of a wall or an object.

Guilloche: on mosaics, decorative feature consisting of two or more intertwining bands. Style in which tesserae or tiles are set in zigzag pattern.

Glass, Venetian Glass: see smalto/smalti.

Grout: Filler that is used to seal the gaps between mosaic pieces after adhesive dries. Grout ensures the surface of the mosaic to be smooth and unified.

Indirect Technique: Mosaic is assembled away from the desired surface and is attached to it later. First design is drawn on paper and tesserae are glued face down with water-soluble adhesive. After the process is complete, mosaic is taken to the desired surface and is placed, face down, into cement bed. Once cement is set, paper can be washed off with water to reveal the mosaic.

Picassiette: technique that uses broken china to create mosaic surfaces.

Roman Style: Style used in ancient Rome to treat floors and walls. Objects are outlined in rows and then filling tesserae are used to fill in the space in-between.

Smalto/ Smalti: glass made specifically for mosaics. Silica is melted and sodium or potassium carbonate are added. Stabilizing elements are added to this mix (magnesium or lead) together with the coloring agents (metals). Smalto is valued for its bright clear surfaces, opacity and translucency and variety of colors. Comes in the shape of approx. 6" pancakes which thereafter are broken into tesserae.

Terra-cotta: Fired clay or clay pieces.

Tessera: Cut pieces of marble, glass, or other mosaic material.

Tumbled Stone: Stone tesserae that have gone through the process of edge smoothing.

Vitreous Glass: Glass that is used for mosaic making. It comes in the form of tiles edges of which are beveled. Comes in many colors. An ideal material for achieving smooth surfaces.
